About the Recipe

As an artist, I love finding ways to add a little creativity to my bakes in both flavors and appearance and this food trend is one of those that I jumped on and don't plan on letting go of anytime soon! For this process, I use my simple sourdough bread recipe and usually start the painting process when there is about 30 minutes left of rise time. While it's a meditative process, you also want to move relatively quickly so your bread surface doesn't dry and crack. I suggest keeping your designs simple for your first attempt in order to get used to the process. Once you have discovered how different gel colors and your bread behaves, you'll feel more confident and freedom to expand your design creativity!

Ingredients

What you'll need:

  • Gel food coloring - feel free to use any colors you like. Pleas note though that colors may change in the oven, especially warm tones which tend to take on pink hues. Coolor colors will remain similar in tone as will white.

  • Paint Brushes

  • A plate or palette to mix your gel colors

  • Water for rinsing your brushes

Preparation

How to paint on bread:

Step 1

Plan your design and mix your gel colors. I always add at least a little bit of white to every color that I use as that will help the colors pop on the bread and allow your design to still stand out after baking.

Step 2

Once all of your colors are prepped, turn your bread out of the vessel its been rising in, onto a piece of parchment or bread mat. Brush off any excess flour on the surface to allow for easier painting.

Step 3

Paint your design onto the bread surface. I like to work at quickly as possible but this is something that you will learn to do the more loaves you paint For your first attempt, just focus on having fun and learning the process!

Step 4

Bake your bread according to your recipe.
